Lincoln wanted to keep the south calm by trying to keep slavery, but later ended up failing and splitting the nation in to two for a while.

Lincoln refused to be beaten and surrender, but instead sent supply ships instead. On April 1861, Confederates fired on Fort Sumter. The Fort had surrendered 34 hours later. The Civil War had begun.
