The South had advantages as well like having a strong military tradition. It was were they put many intelligent and wise officers into battle. The plantations provided food for the soldiers. The South however had the best advantage which was strategy. They would defend them selves and wait for the Union to grow tired of all the fighting. The North had to travel long distances for battles. Because of the long distances the North needed long supply lines.
There was wilderness covering most of the south. Armies and soldiers had a difficult time figuring a way to cross. In Virginia most of it's rivers went from east to west which made a natural defense for the South. The North had thought that instead of attacking from the front it would be better to attack from the side. The South had another advantage because since most battles were fought on home soil, they knew their way around more.
Confederate president Jefferson Davis believed foreign allies would be a great help since Great Britain needs the South's cotton to supply for their booming textile industry. This was known as the cotton diplomacy. This idea however did not work because Great Britian could get cotton easily from Egypt and India.
