Civil War troops fought in the ancient battlefield formation which produced mass casualties. Many rows of troops fired directly at one another, with cannonballs in the mix. When given the order, troops attached bayonets at the end of their guns and charged at the enemies. Many men died. Doctors and nurses helped save many lives, yet they had no medicines to help soldiers avoid infections.

Many soldiers endured the horrific pain of having to cut off legs or arms due to infections, without painkillers. Infections form minor injuries was the cause of many deaths. Yet, the biggest killer form the war wasn't the actual fighting, it was from diseases such as typhoid, pneumonia, and tuberculosis. Nearly twice as many soldiers died from illness as died from combat.
