The war involved all levels of society. If you were unable to help eith the war, you worked in factories and on farms. Economy in the North rose as production and prices boomed. Lack of workers caused wages to raise by 43% between 1860 and 1865. Women kept civilian life running. On farms, women and children did the chores that men usually did. One visitor from 1862 reported ''met more women... at work on fields than men.'' Southern women managed farms and plantations
Volunteer Clara Barton brought strength and comfort to countless wounded Union soldiers. She had medicine and supplies delivered to the battlefield. The ''angel of the battlefield'' helped to soothe the wounded or dying while bullets were flying all around her. Her work formed the basis for the future of the American Red Cross

In the south, Sally Louisa Tompkins opened a small hospital in Richmond, Virginia. By the end of the war, it became an important army hospital. Jefferson Davis recognized her by making her a captain in the Confederate Army.
